Oda was born on March 28, 1929, in Owensmouth, California, alongside her twin sister, Lucy. The two were inseparable from the very start. They spent their early childhood together in an orphanage until the age of 12, when they were welcomed into a loving home by Otto and Emily Idso. Oda grew up in Fullerton, the city that would remain close to her heart for the rest of her life. She attended Fullerton High School and went on to Fullerton College.
For many years, Oda worked at Palm Stationers in Fullerton, where she was a familiar and friendly presence in the community. She married the love of her life, Kenneth F. Hatten, and together they shared a deep love of travel, exploring new places and making memories that would last a lifetime.
Oda had a gift for making a house feel like home. She loved to bake, filling her kitchen with warmth and the people she loved, and she found great joy in her garden, where she tended to things with patience and care. She was a devoted member of St. Luke Church in Fullerton and treasured her time with her PEO chapter and the friendships it brought her.
Oda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth F. Hatten; her twin sister, Lucy Kruse; and her cousin, Lloyd Houske. She is lovingly survived by her son, David Hatten, and his wife, Caren Hatten; her daughter, Karen Thompson, and her husband, Alan Thompson; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. Her family was the great pride of her life, and the love she gave will live on in each of them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Fullerton, with a graveside service to follow at Forest Lawn Cypress. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and to celebrate the remarkable life of a woman who gave so much love to so many.
