Robert Charles Belloli, "Bob", beloved husband, father, professor, and dedicated volunteer, passed away on May 14, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born on November 3, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was raised alongside his younger sister, Dorothy, and brother, Chuck. He grew up in the Italian section of St. Louis, The Hill, where his large extended family also lived and attended school at their local, community church, St. Ambrose.
Bob devoted more than 35 years of his life to education, serving as a professor at California State University, Fullerton with Emeritus status upon his retirement, and was Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 1968 to 2004, the longest tenure in the department's history. A passionate scholar, he earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and remained deeply committed to advancing knowledge and inspiring generations of students throughout his distinguished academic career both inside the classroom and outside as the Director of Academic Advising for all undergraduate students at CSUF. Bob authored a textbook, Contemporary Physical Science: Our Impact on Our World, that was used for many years in his chemistry classes at CSUF. Bob and his wife Shirley funded a scholarship program at CSUF for students interested in pursuing a career teaching chemistry. His colleagues and students remember him for his intellect, steady guidance, and genuine enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring.
Outside of the classroom, Bob lived a life grounded in service and community. He was a dedicated volunteer at St. Jude’s Hospital, Second Harvest Food Bank, and a dog shelter—causes that reflected his compassion and quiet generosity. He was also an avid tennis player, finding joy, discipline, and camaraderie on the court throughout his life and took up golf later in life, which he enjoyed sharing with his two sons.
Bob shared a remarkable 57-year marriage with his beloved wife, Shirley Belloli. Their enduring partnership was the foundation of a life built on love, respect, and shared experiences through travel and commitment to family.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and his twin sons, Jeff and Chris. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, a respected professor, and a kind-hearted volunteer whose life touched many. Bob’s legacy lives on through his family, his students, and the countless lives he influenced. His wisdom, generosity, and dedication will not be forgotten.
