Sophia Pernice (b October, 1928, d. 12/2/2016) grew up the third youngest of 14 children on a family farm in Pennsylvania. Upon finishing high school, she moved to Long Island, NY where she met and fell in love with Charles Pernice. Moving to California, they had four children and were married for 64 years at the time of Charles’ passing. Sophia loved art, painting, fashion, and dancing, but most of all she loved her family. She was a talented designer and seamstress and her children were typically dressed in style, in outfits sewn by her. She was always ready with nurturing advice and coffee or pasta, or with her famous meatballs if you were lucky, for any of her visiting children. Grandma Sophia always kept her pantry stocked with her grandchildren’s favorite sweets. Such was her warmth, wisdom, spirituality and love that her grandchildren always insisted on taking the seats next to her at every family meal. She spoiled us all with her boundless love, generosity and compassion. She is survived by her four children, Deborah, Charles, Robert and Thomas and her four grandchildren, Ryan and Kimberly (Knefel), Jacqueline and Grant, all of whom love and miss her very much.
