Alicia Sexton Brown of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died peacefully on November 11, 2023, surrounded by her devoted children. Alicia was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 28, 1932, the youngest of five children and only daughter born to Franklin C. and Alice Philbin Sexton. A student at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Chicago, she later attended Trinity College in Washington, DC and Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY.
She met the love of her life, Thomas P. Brown III (Tommy), a resident of Washington, DC through her brother Sherman (Hank) while Tommy and Hank attended Georgetown Preparatory School. They married in 1955. Their romance is one for the ages. Tommy predeceased Alicia in 2012 after over 56 years together. Alicia kept ever in the forefront of her thinking the memory of her beloved pal and partner in business.
Alicia is survived by her five children, Thomas Patrick Brown (Mary Douglass), Mark Cullen Brown (Linda), Alicia Brown Powers (Jay), Maria Brown Pitts (Jerry), and Beatrice Brown Edwards (Doug); 14 grandchildren who adored her, Caitlin (Peter), Maria (Eric), Tommy (Michaela), Maudie, Christopher (Kate), Michael, Kathleen, Fitz (Alaina), Annie (Pramish), Kevin, Tommy, Julia, Quinn and Alicia; and seven great-grandchildren.
Alicia was a valued confidante of each and every one of her grandchildren. This unique and special relationship was strengthened by her and Tommy's annual tradition of hosting a family gathering at the Outer Banks in North Carolina, a delightful highlight of each year. The bonds nurtured at OBX between grandmother and grandchildren and among the cousins are truly profound. Her children carried forward this storied tradition in 2022 to honor Alicia's 90th birthday with all 38 family members in attendance for a week of celebration under one roof.
Amid the happy chaos of managing a household of five active children and rambunctious pets, and never failing to attend daily Mass, Alicia managed to distinguish herself by her extensive work with local charities, most notably her service for over 35 years with each of Meals on Wheels and the Christ Child Society.
Above all, Alicia will be remembered for her deep devotion to her faith, her love of family, her elegance and sense of style, her killer instinct at Bridge and other card games and her mischievous sense of humor. Her endearing smile communicated volumes on her inherent warmth, her charm and her innate playfulness.
To honor Alicia's wishes, the Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alicia's memory can be made to Christ Child Society of Washington, DC
