Anthony Mario Guglielmo was born on a holy day, August 15, 1936, to proud parents Xaveria (“Sadie”) Scorca and Salvatore Guglielmo. He was a true New Yorker, growing up in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, attending the Macy’s Day parades and enjoying summer days at Coney Island with his four beloved siblings Connie, Antoinette, Michael and Rosemary. He graduated from Xavier High School, the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, and the Columbia University School of Business.
As a young midshipman, Anthony sailed around the world, inspiring a lifelong love of travel. He was on the brink of setting off with the Peace Corps when he was swept off his feet by the charm and irreverent wit of Jean Baumgarten, who kept him on his toes and laughing for nearly 64 years of marriage. The two raised five children: Gemma, Gabe, Rachel, Adam, and Gus, and although he had a long and successful career in financial planning, with stints in Connecticut, California, Alabama, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, his heart was always with his family and his faith. He was unfailingly present – cheering his wife and children on through music lessons, swim meets, soccer and basketball games, homework, college drop-offs and pick-ups, graduations, first jobs, overseas adventures, opera performances, and all manner of triumphs and disappointments. He was a lifelong learner, always curious and engaged in the world until the very end.
As his children married, Anthony enthusiastically welcomed Joseph, Romelda, Tim, Angie, and Tammy-Lynne into the family, and with the arrival of beloved grandchildren Rose, Alex, Lily, Zoe, Nic, Maddy, and Ben, he happily launched into a never-ending round of holiday visits, school plays, sports events, marching band performances, family feasts, travels to new states and countries, and long conversations – he was always up for all of it.
Anthony received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and died on Sunday, June 7th. His children will always cherish the wonderful memories they have of him: how he read with them, hiked with them, rode the waves with them, and was always there when they called. He had a shout, a laugh, a loving heart, a care for others, and a vivid presence which has left a lasting mark on his family and many others, and he will never be forgotten. Hup, hup, let’s go.
A reception will be held at the DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg, MD on Friday, June 26th from 5-8:00 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00 AM at the chapel located in the Parkview building at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD.
