

Artha Jean Snyder passed peacefully on Friday January 20, 2023 at 97 years of age in Gaithersburg, MD. Artha Jean was born in Columbus Ohio on November 30, 1925 to the late Richard and Jennet Burington. She received her Bachelors in Mathematics from Oberlin College in 1947 and her MEd from University of Maryland in 1950. Artha Jean started her career in teaching, and later accepted a position as Operations and Program Analyst for the Atomic Energy Commission in 1953. Artha Jean and her beloved husband Grant were married in May 1958 in Arlington, VA. She went to work as a mathematician, analyst and publisher for the Division of Nuclear Energy at DOE in 1974 and retired in 1986. After her husband's retirement from the Air Force, they moved to Germantown MD in 1970 until 2002, when they moved to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg MD, after previously residing together in Texas and Scotland. Artha Jean and Grant traveled extensively to many countries and throughout the United States. She loved keeping in touch with her old friends from college, the Air Force and their previous neighbors. They were very involved at Darnestown Presbyterian Church, becoming a Deacon, Elder, Circle Leader, and joining the Women’s Board, and Missions and Building Grounds committee. We can't forget her making her famous apple pies for the annual church bazaar! Artha Jean became very involved at Asbury Village with Musicals, Keese school, Labor Day parades, and becoming an AVTV announcer. Most of all, she enjoyed writing out her memories about all her amazing long lived life. Artha Jean was small in stature, but her personality was larger than life. She was a strong and faithful loving servant who touched many lives.
Artha Jean is survived by her nieces and nephew: Bonnie Brooks, Karen Sulmonetti, John Burington, Jennet Burington, and Jeanne Burington. Also survived by her grand niece and nephews: Taylor, Cole, Melissa, Carson and Mateo. Artha Jean was pre-deceased by her loving husband Grant Snyder, brother Richard Burington and sister Juanita Sulmonetti.
A Funeral Service is being held at Darnestown Presbyterian Church (15120 Turkey Foot Rd. Gaithersburg, MD 20878) on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 1:00 PM, reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The American Parkinson Disease Association www.apdaparkinson.org or to Darnestown Presbyterian Church www.darnestownpc.org/giving/ in her name.
