Betty Jean (Schryer) Stockton passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 99 following loving visits with family members and her caregivers. Betty is survived by her two children, Cynthia (Debra) Mahoney of Maryland and Russell Paul Schryer of Connecticut. She was predeceased by her parents Paul Alfred Schryer and Theresa Mae (nee Russell) Schryer; and her siblings, Tracy Mae (nee Schryer) Vincent, Claire Schryer, Russell Paul Schryer, Donald James Schryer, and Doris Eileen (nee Schryer) Kerley. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Betty grew up in Casper, Wyoming; moved to Washington, DC toward the end of WWII, then relocated to Montana where she met and married Frank Stockton, a WWII veteran. The marriage ended in divorce. Betty then joined the U.S. Air Force as a ground-breaking woman in the intelligence service in Europe during the Cold War. A key role, while based in West Germany, was shuttling important security documents by train from West Germany through East Germany to Berlin. Following her military service, she continued her federal service as a civilian with the U.S. Navy, including a two year tour in Reykjavik, Iceland followed by longer term assignments in San Diego, California.
In her later life, Betty joined her family in Maryland. In many conversations with her nieces and nephews, she offered an encyclopedic memory of her family history and her various tours of duty that have served as a foundation for Schryer family history. Betty had a life-long love of Star Trek, kitty cats and watching ME TV. She taught her family members resilience when faced with difficult circumstances and how little material things are needed in life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 West Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held in the church hall immediately following the service.
Betty will be laid to rest in Highland Park Cemetery in Casper, Wyoming with her parents and other family members, fulfilling her final wish to return to her hometown.
May God bless Betty as she is reunited with her loving family both in Casper and in Heaven!
