Charles Salem Asmar Jr.

Born on September 26, 1935, in Danbury, Connecticut, Charlie earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Boston University, proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Tank Commander, and later earned a law degree from George Washington University Law School.

After graduating BU, Charlie was indoctrinated as an aeronautical design evaluation engineer for the US Department of Commerce (Civil Aeronautics Administration) and cleared for secret in 1958. His CAA services included dynamic testing of civil and military aircraft, conducting test flights of aircraft, and assessing aircraft crashworthiness. Charlie joined Honeywell in 1961 where he became lead salesman after being awarded the automatic temperature control contract for the construction of Dulles International Airport. In 1967, Charlie opened Asmar Co., Inc., a mechanical contracting firm providing residential, commercial, and governmental design build mechanical services for over 25 years in the DC Metro Area. In 1992 Charlie lead the Mechanical Department for Chas H. Tompkins Co. in Washington D.C. and he concluded his career as a mechanical consultant at 89 years (young).

Charlie was a devoted and loving husband. He loved his wife, Mary, so very much--they traveled the world together and were inseparable. Charlie was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a man who unequivocally loved others and he was blessed with an endearing smile, sense of humor, and vernacular. Those who were fortunate enough to meet Charlie, never forgot the encounter, and were drawn to him by his warmth, easy manner (“chill out”), and his great sense of humor. His gift for connecting with all people left them with everlasting impressions--he was truly one of a kind.

He found deep joy in time spent with his family, especially in Western Maryland at Deep Creek Lake, a happy place that he forever cherished and where he and his wife Mary taught his children to ski (water and snow), sail, fish, and explore God’s gift of nature. Many family trips were spent in Aspen, Colorado, Alpine skiing and enjoying time with family and friends.

Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Chuck (wife Alta), Suzanne (husband Alex), and Michael (wife Morgan); grandchildren, Christiana, Charlie, Georgia, Oliver, Isabel, Flora, and Arlo; and great-grandchildren, Danny, Beau, and Shea.

Charlie will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and his genuine love for others. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.

A mass of Christian burial will be held privately.
