The incomparable Dalton Lloyd Foster, affectionately known as Fos, was called home to our Lord and Savior on March 16, 2021. Dalton was born on March 17, 1942, to Hermie Murray and Magnus Fergus Foster in Savanna La Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica. He attended St. Aloysius school and then earned his teaching degree at Mico College where he met lifelong friends, such as his Great Class of ‘63 batchmates. Dalton taught at St. George’s College until 1968 when he decided to move to the Bahamas to teach. In July, just before he left, Dalton met the equally incomparable Lylvia Francis, at a beach party. He approached her to ask if she planned to swim (read: with him) and she said she had a headache. He left and soon after returned with some Panadol, a pain medication. As they say, “the rest is history.” That October they were married and soon moved to Nassau, Bahamas.
Dalton taught at St. Augustine’s College in Nassau and then decided to attend the University of Ottawa in Canada to earn his bachelor’s degree in English. He put his lessons to good use by writing Lyl beautiful letters during that time to check on her and their first two beautiful children, Dalton Andrew and Kara Denise.
Upon completion of his degree, Dalton returned to the Bahamas, where he taught English Language and English Literature and chaired the English Department at St. John’s College. He enjoyed his time there, met many friends, taught talented students, and found a small piece of home in the Jamaica Hummingbirds Association, an organization of Jamaican expatriates. Dalton and Lylvia had two more wonderful children in the Bahamas -- Brian and Keri.
In 1987, Dalton decided to move his family to New York, determined to give his children the best possible opportunities in life. He taught at Child’s Memorial Christian Academy in Harlem, New York for a few years and then found his school home at Bronx Regional High School in the Bronx, New York. While at Bronx Regional, Dalton served as Head of the English Department, earned a master’s degree from the City College of New York, and continued to change countless lives through teaching. He eventually retired from Bronx Regional in 2013 after a 50-year career.
Dalton accomplished so much despite many challenges very early in life. He would say, though, that his greatest accomplishments are his children Dalton (Andy), Kara (Denise), Brian, and Keri. He loved them beyond measure and was so very proud of who they have all grown to be. Being a loving father was such a deep part of who he was, that he extended that fatherly love to other relatives and to his students.
We, his family, are immeasurably proud of the man Dalton was and the legacy he has left behind. He left us feeling firmly loved, necessary, and whole and we are ever so grateful to have shared so much time with him.
Left to celebrate his life are his wife of almost 53 years, Lylvia Foster, his children Dalton Andrew, Kara Denise, Brian, and Keri, his daughters-in-law Roslynn and Xiania, his son-in-law Dale Lewis, his darling grandchildren McKenzie, Charles, David, Dean, Julian, and Lera, his sister-in-law Hyacinth Smith, brothers-in-law Derrick Francis, Lydney Francis, and Granville Smith, a host of other relatives, and many, many friends.
