Elizabeth “Liz” Ethel McBride of Montgomery Village, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 in Washington, DC, surrounded by her loving family. Liz was born on May 25, 1953 at Georgetown University Hospital to the late Richard and Bessie McBride. Richard, whom she deeply loved and admired, emigrated from Ireland in 1927; Bessie, her warm-hearted mother, and her children’s adored grandmother, was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1915.
Liz obtained her high school diploma from the Academy of Notre Dame in 1971. She then studied English literature as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park. Thereafter, she completed her formal education in English literature as a graduate student at Catholic University.
Professionally, Liz worked as a technical writer and legal secretary; she was a gifted prose writer, who sacrificed her authorial and editorial ambitions to give herself entirely to her family. That said, she wrote; read fervently; and, upon retiring in December 2020, enrolled in courses at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College. She embodied the classical, life-long drive to learn and live morally: “For one swallow does not make a summer, nor does one day; and so too one day, or a short time, does not make a [wo]man blessed and happy.”
Liz’s love for others was unbounded and she greeted all and sundry with a joyous smile and tender heart. Her sons, Adam and Zachary, were her pride and joy: both their love for her and their academic achievements made her immeasurably happy. Liz will be remembered for her indomitable spirit; her unwavering love for her family; and her joy for living, no matter the circumstances. Her humanity, mercy, and empathy for all–especially for those stricken by misfortune–will endure and afford hope and guidance to those blessed to have known her.
Liz is survived by her husband, Benyoucef Lazri, of Montgomery Village, Maryland; her sons, Adam (Sasha) Lazri and Zachary (Illiana) Lazri; her siblings–Mary McBride of Virginia; Colleen (Michael) Kelly of Mercer Island, Washington; and Richard (Meryl) McBride of Bradenton, Florida; and her many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at DeVol Funeral Home–10 E Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877–on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. A funeral service and liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. A burial service will be held immediately afterward at All Souls Cemetery: 11401 Brink Road, Germantown, Maryland 20876.
Befitting Liz’s spirit, her family kindly requests redirecting any money allotted for sympathy flowers to the DC Central Kitchen www.dccentralkitchen.org or the Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis www.wheelermission.org.
