Elizabeth Vargo

Elizabeth (Betty) Vargo (93) passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024. She was born on October 19, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio to Julius and Helen Hartman. She resided in the Cleveland area until 1977 when the family moved to Maryland. She married her beloved husband, the late Al Vargo, in 1957 at the First Hungarian Reformed Church in Cleveland where they met. Al and Betty shared 66 happy years together.

Betty was a very devoted and loving mother to her three daughters and an incredible “Grandma Betty.” Her family was her life. She adored all six of her grandchildren and was always there to support and cheer them on. She enjoyed cooking Hungarian meals and baking with the grandkids. Betty had a servant's heart and loved to help others including volunteering at the Lord’s Table, Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church and the Fourth Presbyterian School . She also made it her mission to sew hundreds of pillowcases for children in hospitals.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Al, who sadly passed away in December. She is survived by her three daughters, Karen Walker (Don), Diane Malloy (Marty), Sharon Olson (Brad) and her six grandchildren, Garrett and Ava Walker, Haley and Sarah Malloy, Connor and Kelsey Olson. She is also survived by her younger brother, Frank Hartman (Carol) and many nieces and nephews and their children too. She was predeceased by her sister Violet Sarosi and brother Charles Hartman.

Betty's outgoing personality, huge heart and love of life will be missed by all who knew her. She has left behind an amazing legacy. Her beautiful smile, positive attitude and outlook on life were admired by all.

A service celebrating a life well lived will take place on August 1, 2024 at 10:00a.m. at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive in Gaithersburg. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.
