Ellen Frances Mawhinney passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, at the age of 87, after a brief battle with cancer. Ellen was born on December 31, 1938, in the District of Columbia, where she lived until her retirement when she moved to The Fallswood Condo in North Bethesda, Maryland in 1995. She went to Immaculata High School and then Georgetown Visitation Junior College, both in DC.
She was always an independent woman for her time with a civil service career who enjoyed traveling the world and playing golf with her friends. An avid reader, she kept current by reading the Washington Post daily and enjoying her condo library book exchange. Her family and faith were especially important to her; Ellen never missed family events and holiday celebrations. She embraced all of the spouses and extended families with love, and often remembered more details about all of their lives than some of us! She enjoyed many years of golf, bowling and bridge with her friends at Kenwood Country Club, and later bridge with her condo community.
Taken so abruptly from us, Ellen’s quick wit and generous spirit will be missed. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann (Mawhinney) Lynch of Rockville, MD, 1 niece, Mary Ellen Lynch Comisso (Steven) of Toronto, Ontario, 2 nephews Thomas John Lynch (Chelsea) of Washington, DC and Dennis Francis Lynch (Therese) of Glyndon, MD, and six grandnephews and one grandniece. All of these survivors were able to visit with her in her final days. She was preceded in death by her parents John Alford Mawhinney and Mary (Hourihane) Mawhinney, and by her older brother, Rev. John Joseph Mawhinney, SJ.
