Esther Hernandez

Born in Chaparra, Cuba, to Sarkis and Marien Chediak, Esther went on to graduate from the University of Havana with a degree in Pharmacology. In 1955, she married Francisco Hernandez Sr., and the two remained devoted to each other until his passing in 2022.

To escape the Castro revolution, Esther and Francisco immigrated to the United States in 1960 and became U.S. citizens while continuing to funnel support to the family they left behind. They raised their family on Long Island, New York, before eventually relocating to Maryland in retirement to be closer to family.

Esther was incredibly well traveled, having spent much of her husband’s career accompanying him on his many business trips, as well as continuing to travel in retirement. Spain was one of their favorite locations, and the couple would travel there extensively. She was a devout Catholic who loved flowers and gardening, especially growing orchids.

Above all, Esther was renowned as an extraordinary cook with a remarkable gift for replicating any dish simply by tasting it. Some of her specialties were so much in demand that she would hide portions to ensure latecomers didn’t miss out. Her recipes that have been passed down will continue to keep her memory alive.

Esther is survived by her four children: Esther Hamill (husband Adrian), Francisco Hernandez Jr. (wife Karen), Nancy Modarress (husband Kevin), and Santiago Hernandez (wife Cindy), as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
