Born on September 24, 1939 to Francis Wade Holman, M.D., and Helen Augusta Shafto Holman in Keyport, New Jersey, Frank had an active childhood spent principally in Keyport and on a nearby family farm. From an early age, Frank excelled in school. Frank’s formal education included Peddie School, Highstown, New Jersey, class of June 1956; Columbia College (A.B., Liberal Arts), class of 1960; Columbia University Graduate School of Business Administration (M.B.A. Finance), class of 1962; and Boston College School of Law (LL.B.), class of 1965. Until the day he passed, Frank had immense pride in each of his schools. He wore Columbia hats and sweatshirts until the day he passed and, if asked about his time at Boston College Law, would quickly recount that Rev. Robert F. Drinan, S.J. (former Dean of Boston College Law School, who Frank respected greatly) had moved for Frank’s admission to the U.S. Supreme Court bar. An accomplished professional writer and speaker, Frank worked most of his career in the Washington D.C. area as an attorney at the Machinery and Allied Products Institute (later known as the Manufacturers Alliance) focused on government regulatory activity in the areas of finance and accounting.
Frank and Rose raised their two children in Silver Spring and later Rockville, Maryland. Frank had as a primary focus each day delivering for his children the opportunities he had received and providing a home for his family, immediate and extended. If a family member had a need, Frank would meet it (taking into the home and helping care for his father and Rose’s aunt at different points). Frank enjoyed ice skating (something he had done competitively in his youth), skiing with his family, weekend cooking (pizza, bread, and homemade potato chips were particular favorites), tracking the stock market with Rose, and watching sports (especially the Washington Nationals). In their later years, Frank and Rose spent much time surrounded by grandchildren in their kitchen, living room, and dining room enjoying each day, test, game, or aspiration recounted. To Frank and Rose nothing provided greater joy.
Frank is survived by Helen Barbara Holman Burkhardt (sister), Elise A. Holman (daughter), Craig A. Holman (son) and Cindy R. Holman (wife), Wayne A. Holman (grandson) and Nina A. Koutsias (wife), Ryan C. Holman (grandson) and Kendall C. Holman (wife), Ben A. Holman (grandson) and Caroline S. Holman (wife), and Caroline M. Holman (granddaughter). Frank’s family will miss him.
