James H. Parent

Born on January 10, 1938 in Greenville, Maine, he was the son of the late Alfred and Harriett Owens Parent.

James proudly served in United States Coast Guard for 30 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 from the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He held many positions, beginning as an engineer on the Barataria. He was assigned to New Orleans, Louisiana and Norfolk, Virginia, and served two tours in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He returned to USCG Headquarters Merchant Marine Safety office where he served as Deputy Chief , the Office Marine Environmental System and Executive Secretary of the Marine Safety Council. His final assignment was Commanding Officer of the Marine Safety Office in Baltimore, Maryland.

James was awarded 3 Meritorious service medals and 2 Coast Guard Commendation Medals.

He played many sports growing up which included; football, baseball, basketball and being inducted into United States Coast Guard Academy hall of fame. He also enjoyed coaching his son Michael in sports.

Jim felt strongly about service to his country, to his Catholic faith and his beautiful family. We were all blessed to have him in our lives. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Parent, who passed away on May 29, 2024 and a sister, Crystal Lamontagne. Jim is survived by a son Michael Parent and his wife Liz, and his daughter Maria Jeanette Patswald. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Alyssa Berkheimer, Connor Patswald, Brendan Parent, Kara Patswald and Jessica Parent and four great-grandchildren, Adalynn Grace, Mila Jane, Colbie Elain Berkheimer and Brooks Landon Parent, and his sister Ann Hotchkiss

A visitation will be held at Mother Seton Parish in Germantown, Maryland, 19951 Father Hurley Boulevard, Germantown, Maryland 20874 on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial offered at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia at a later date with a date and time to be announced.
