Jean was born June 5, 1940 in Hammonton, New Jersey. As the blueberry capital of the world, she grew up frolicking in the blueberry fields. A uniquely talented woman from a young age, she found local fame as an avid trumpeter in the Drum and Bugle Corps.
At age 20, she went out dancing with girlfriends when she met an attractive, sweet-talking gentleman training at the McGuire Air Force base. Friends recount that Paul was swept off his feet and monopolized her dance card all night. Once Paul was back in Alaska, they made long distance look easy with their heartfelt love letters. They tied the knot on September 8, 1962.
Once married, they quickly expanded their family with three beautiful girls: Susan, Gina, and Joy. They traveled all over the country, from Massacheusets to Arizona, as Paul rose through the IT industry. Jean remained the glue that held the family together as they moved around to 6 different states. Finally, they settled down and made Maryland their permanent home. Jean, with her easy going and loveable nature, quickly made a community for herself and family. She thrived volunteering with the school system, engaging with bible study, swimming, and besting friends at bridge.
After years of hard work, Jean and Paul reached a well-earned retirement. They then spent their time traveling and spoiling grandchildren. The best of times was when she was able to combine the two. Jean would often speak of some of her favorite adventures. Most notable was voyaging to Italy to convene mass with the Pope then traveling to her family's hometown of Calabria.
Unfortunately, after 53 years of marriage, Paul passed on with his ever-supportive wife right at his side. Afterwards, Jean's difficult journey with Alzheimer's began. Though her memory struggles continued to progress, she never lost her sweet nature and loving compassion.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband Paul Lea, mother Concetta (Jenny) Fichetola, father Vito Pete Fichetola, sister Marie Santacrose, brother Rocco Fichetola, twin Carmella Rivera, and grandson Matthew Foster. She is survived by sister Verna Parks, daughters Susan Lea, Gina Franke (Paul), Joy Foster (Ron), grandchildren Lea Newport (Ryan), Jenna Hurley (Max), Madison Knepper (James), and many additional loving family members.
