Jill Ione Prater

Jill Ione Prater, 57, of North Potomac, Maryland passed away on October 16, 2026, at her residence. Born in Owensboro, Kentucky on May 24, 1969, she was a daughter of Wanda Melhiser Prater and the late James Lida Prater.

Jill was a graduate of the University of Louisville and Harvard Law School. As an attorney, she started her career in the private sector in employment law followed by decades of service in the public sector as a trademark attorney at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Her interests included travel, basketball, and the arts.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas P. Kimbis; their two daughters, Kelly and Samantha; her mother; sister; five nieces; and hundreds of loving family members and friends.

Services will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit refuge for farm animals and wildlife near Jill’s home (AnimalSanctuary.org)
