

Joan Bernard Maxham, passed away on January 30, 2023 in Olney, Maryland, where she’d been living for the past five years. Joan was born on December 1, 1936 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts the youngest of six children of Chester and Florence Bernard. Her siblings, Florence Sairs, Chester J. Bernard, Constance Bernard, Mary Jane Swanberg and Eleanor McGrath, preceded her in death.
Joan attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English in 1958. She married David Maxham in 1957 and they were married for 25 years. Joan lived most of her life in Worcester and Montpelier, Vermont. She was a loving mother and grandmother and is survived by her sons, Art (Martha) Maxham and James (Nora) Maxham and three grandchildren, Andrew Maxham (Gina), Jill Singhaus (Steve) and Scott Maxham (Danielle) and four great grandchildren, Jake, Parker, Charlotte and Tessa.
Joan worked for many years as a travel agent for Milne Travel, Travel with D.J. and Triple AAA Travel all of Montpelier. An avid traveler herself, Joan enjoyed traveling to many places around the world, but loved the beauty of Vermont more than anything she ever saw on her trips.
A celebration of her life will be held in Maryland at Mill Creek Parish UMC on February 4, 2023 at 2:00PM and a graveside service will be held in Vermont this summer, where her ashes will be interred at the Worcester Village Cemetery.
