

Joanna Mary Lowther, 79, died from a rare blood disorder 23 November 2022. Her death occurred at home on Capitol Hill, surrounded by family. The former Joanna Mary Kelly was born 26 October 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario, into a strong Irish-Canadian Catholic family and graduated from the University of Toronto. She married William Anthony Lowther in 1967 and they moved to London, England, and then Paris, France, before settling in Washington, DC, in 1972. Joanna was a social worker with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, Toronto, and later administrator for the Church of the Reformation in Washington and administrator for St Peter Catholic School in Washington.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years William; son Will; daughter Nicola Whitaker (Scott) and son Christopher (Jennifer). She is also survived by grandchildren Cecily, Charles, Katherine and James; sister Maura Chrystal (Allan) and brothers Kevin (Marisa) and Barry (Fionnuala).
Joanna had a wonderful smile. She was full of kindness, compassion and caring. A funeral Mass will be held at 2pm Saturday, December 3, 2022 at St Peter’s Church, Capitol Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Horton’s Kids @ www.hortonskids.com.
