José Celso Sánchez Funes passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, in Columbia, Maryland. He was surrounded by the love, warmth, and presence of his family. A proud Salvadoran, Celso carried his heritage with him throughout his life, weaving it into the values he lived by and the love he shared so generously.
Celso often described himself as a professor and a humanist—identities that shaped the way he moved through the world. He believed deeply in people, in learning, and in the quiet power of kindness. Those who knew him felt this immediately: he listened with intention, spoke with purpose, and cared with a sincerity that left an imprint on everyone he met.
He was an extraordinary father, a devoted husband of 44 years, a joyful grandfather, a wonderful brother, and a loyal friend. His family was the center of his universe, and he filled their lives with laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support. Whether cheering for his beloved Terps basketball team or celebrating a FC Barcelona victory, Celso brought enthusiasm and heart to every moment. Sports were never just games to him—they were a way to connect, to celebrate, and to savor life.
During his final days, Celso found delight in simple pleasures: vanilla ice cream, iced Coke, and the comfort of being surrounded by those he loved most. Even then, he radiated happiness, gratitude, and an unmistakable love for life.
For more than 14 years, Celso was a dedicated member of the Bolger Center community in Potomac, Maryland. His work there reflected his character—steady, thoughtful, and always rooted in service. He was also a professor of philosophy at various universities and higher education institutions in El Salvador before moving to Silver Spring, Maryland.
Celso’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the extraordinary doctors, nurses, and care teams at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Their expertise, compassion, and relentless commitment gave the family precious time with him—time they will forever cherish. Celso’s family also offer heartfelt thanks to the family of the lung transplant donor, whose profound generosity allowed them the gift of a little more life, laughter, and love with Celso.
Celso leaves behind a legacy of gentleness, curiosity, and humanity. His spirit lives on in the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the countless lives he touched. Celso will be missed beyond measure and remembered with infinite love forever!
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 10 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Bethesda, Maryland, with burial immediately after at 12 pm at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Fue un padre extraordinario, un esposo devoto durante 44 años, un abuelo lleno de alegría, un hermano maravilloso y un amigo leal. Su familia era el centro de su universo, y llenó sus vidas de risas, sabiduría y un apoyo inquebrantable. Ya fuera animando a su querido equipo de baloncesto, los Terps, o celebrando una victoria del FC Barcelona, Celso ponía entusiasmo y corazón en cada momento. Para él, los deportes nunca fueron solo juegos: eran una forma de conectar, celebrar y saborear la vida.
Durante sus días finales, Celso encontró alegría en placeres sencillos: helado de vainilla, Coca-Cola con hielo y la tranquilidad de estar rodeado por quienes más amaba. Incluso entonces, irradiaba felicidad, gratitud y un amor por la vida imposible de confundir.
Durante más de 14 años, Celso fue un miembro dedicado de la comunidad del Bolger Center en Potomac, Maryland. Su trabajo allí reflejaba su carácter: constante, reflexivo y siempre arraigado en el servicio. También fue profesor de filosofía en varias universidades e instituciones de educación superior en El Salvador antes de mudarse a Silver Spring, Maryland.
La familia de Celso expresa su más profundo agradecimiento a los extraordinarios médicos, enfermeras y equipos de atención del Hospital Johns Hopkins. Su experiencia, compasión y compromiso incansable le dieron a la familia tiempo invaluable con él, tiempo que siempre atesorarán. La familia también ofrece un agradecimiento sincero a la familia del donante de pulmón, cuya profunda generosidad les permitió disfrutar un poco más de vida, risas y amor junto a Celso.

Los servicios fúnebres se llevarán a cabo el Jueves, 29 de Enero del 2026 a las 10 am en la Iglesia Episcopal de St. Luke’s en Bethesda, Maryland, con el entierro inmediatamente después a las 12pm en el Cementerio Gate of Heaven en Silver Spring, Maryland.
