

Joseph Kavanagh died on January 2, 2016 at his home after a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 11, 1938. He attended St. Patrick?s Elementary School, Brooklyn Technical High School, The Bullis School, and was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, class of 1961.
During his time on active duty he served on the destroyers USS O?Hare and USS Laffey. He left active duty in 1965 and began his private sector career. In 1969 he co-founded Vector Research Company and in 1988 he founded NTI Corporation, a provider of engineering services to the United States Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra, (nee Hendley); two sons, Joseph C. Kavanagh (Mercedes) of Bethesda, MD; Edward H. Kavanagh (Karen) of Poolesville, MD; and a daughter Elizabeth Summers (Jeff) of Brookeville,MD; six grandchildren: Katie, Grace, Jack, Jimmy, Caroline and Theodore. He is also survived by a sister, Helene Weyant, and a brother, Leonard Kavanagh.
A Service will be held at the US Naval Academy Columbarium on Tuesday, January 12 at 1 pm.
