Kunjukunjamma, whose name in Malayalam translates to “little-sister,” was affectionately called “Ponni,” or “precious golden one.” She was born to Achamma and Iype Mathew, members of a Jacobite Syrian Christian Orthodox family, on Christmas Eve in 1937.
Youngest of eight, she grew up in North Paravur, Kerala, in southern India, at a time when the country was still part of the British Empire. A brave and independent young woman, she attained her bachelor’s in nursing at CMC Vellore Hospital, one of India’s leading medical institutions. Shortly thereafter, she left India to work as a nurse in
Aramco, Saudi Arabia, at a time when it was uncommon for women to pursue such independent careers abroad.
In the mid-sixties she married George Thomas, joined the Mar Thoma Church, and moved to Bahrain, where they built a life together. Among the first women in Bahrain granted a driver’s license, she worked at the American Mission Hospital before having two children and dedicating herself full-time to raising a family. Together, she and her husband touched countless lives by bringing families from their rural hometowns in India to build prosperous
lives in the Middle East. Later in life, she moved to the United States and played a pivotal role in seeing her grandchildren grow into remarkable young adults.
A woman of warmth and faith, Ponni found great joy in Christ and in caring for her family. Her kitchen was an expression of love, and a reflection of her deep connection to the rich traditions of Kerala. She had a passion for gardening, winning multiple awards and being featured in magazines in India. Regardless of age, she was bold and adventurous, always open to new experiences. She leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Kunjukunjamma George passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, June 14, 2026, while holding hands with her son and daughter.
