For a woman who never fully settled in one country, Toni Proaño-Sánchez spent a remarkable share of her life helping other people find a place to land: as a librarian at the United States Embassy in Quito, as a manager of housing programs in suburban Maryland, and, in retirement, as the unofficial problem-solver for a sprawling network of Ecuadorian relatives and friends.
Toni died of lymphoma on October 8, 2026, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. She was 70.
Her life ran on two tracks, north and south, from the time she was a teenager. It began in Quito and returned there, but much of what she built in between was in the United States, and she moved back and forth between the two countries for most of her adult life.
She was born on June 13, 1956, in Quito, one of six children of Fausto Cristóbal ProañoMoreno and Carmen Ricardina “Teresa” Suárez López. She grew up in the La Mañosca
neighborhood, attended La Providencia for primary school and Colegio Santa María Eufrasia for high school, and spent her final year of high school as an exchange student in Chicago. She
later studied journalism in the United States.
Back in Quito, she worked in banking and then as an outreach librarian at the Biblioteca Lincoln, the U.S. Embassy’s library, where her job was to bring its resources to Ecuadorians who might not otherwise walk through its doors. The friendships she made there lasted the rest of her life.
She lived in Miami from 1990 to 1994 and settled in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 2003, first in Montgomery Village and later in Clarksburg. As a program manager at the county’s Department of Housing and Community Affairs, she worked on programs for residents who needed a place to live. Public service was the work she believed in most. In 2004 she married Nelson Fernando “Tito” Sánchez, and her family grew to include his daughters, Gaby and Cristina, and later Gaby’s children, Liam and Elisa, whom she adored. She retired to Quito in 2021 and returned to Maryland in 2025 for cancer treatment.
She was a devout Catholic and godmother to several children. She cooked the food of her childhood, including fritada, hornado and ceviche, and kept up a running kitchen rivalry with her son-in-law in which she always knew one more trick. She watched telenovelas in whatever language she could find them: Spanish, Turkish, Korean. She was a doting grandmother who slipped her grandson sweets when his parents weren’t looking, and who once tried to cure his
2 picky eating with chicken-feet soup. The soup did not work.
She is survived by her husband, Nelson Fernando “Tito” Sánchez; her daughters, Sophia Verenice Parodi Proaño and Andrea Veronica Parodi Proaño; her son-in-law, Matthew Salomon; her stepdaughters, Gabriela Sánchez and Cristina Sánchez; her grandson, Bruce Santiago Salomon Parodi; her step-grandchildren, Liam and Elisa; her brothers, Fausto Ramiro, Francisco Xavier and Oscar Mauricio Proaño; her sisters, Lourdes Victoria del Amparo and María Belén Proaño; her godchildren; and the many nieces and nephews she loved. In Quito, where she spent her last good years, she was rarely off the phone. The calls were almost always about someone else’s trouble: a cousin’s, a neighbor’s, an old friend’s. She
would listen, tell them exactly what to do, and then set about fixing it herself. Her son-in-law called her the Mayor.
A viewing will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, October 16, at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Maryland, followed by a funeral service from 2 to 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blood Cancer United: https://givenow.bloodcancerunited.org/campaign/717321/donate
