Jackie is survived by her four sons Dr. James (Kerri), and their children Ryan, Caroline, and Matty; Matthew (Kimberly) Quinn, Michael, and James; John (Amy) Lily, Johnny, and Tommy; Tim (Whitney) TJ, Granger, and Haley.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James St Clair Gardiner, her parents, Jack and Marie Ryan, and her two sisters, Joan Mulqueen and Pat Goyette.
Jackie graduated from St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Georgetown University School of Nursing, where she graduated at the top of her class. She did graduate work at Catholic University and was a nurse at Georgetown University Hospital, where she also taught in the nursing school. She returned back to the University of Maryland after her children went off to school, where she took graduate studies in psychology and mental health. She worked part-time at Suburban Hospital's inpatient psychiatric unit for 15 years, helping treat thousands of patients with mental illnesses.
Jackie and Jim loved to travel after finally getting all of their boys through private and graduate schools. They traveled extensively through Europe, New Zealand, and Australia; however, a clear favorite was their many trips to Ireland. These trips always included plenty of golf, Guinness, and laughter. They enjoyed their summers together with the Eighth Avenue crew in Southern Shores, North Carolina and winters with their many dear friends at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida.
She lost the love of her life on November 13, 2004, after 44 wonderful years of marriage. She still continued to travel and celebrate life but really enjoyed her time with her 12 grandchildren, who all called her Gammy. She was a frequent flyer at the chairs of Columbia Country Club, where she could be found holding court, talking to everyone, and enjoying a Canadian Club on the rocks.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on February 11, 2023, at 11 o’clock at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington DC. The family will gather and greet at 10 am before the Mass. An Irish celebration of a life well lived will follow at Columbia Country Club, Chevy Chase, Maryland.
She will be buried at Arlington cemetery at a time to be determined next to her loving husband, Jim, and a son lost at childbirth, Joseph.
