

Mary Theresa Mahony, 89 resident of Glen Echo Heights in Bethesda, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Suburban Hospital. Born and raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret. Mary graduated with a B.A. in Education from Trinity University in 1962 and went on to earn a M.A in Guidance and Counseling from Columbia University in 1970 and a Ph. D in Educational Policy and Intercultural Education in1983 from University of Southern California.
A woman of deep faith, Mary had a constant desire to educate and serve her entire life. She began her professional life as a teacher with the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur. She had just recently retired in March of 2022 after spending more than four decades working in Washington D.C. During her tenure she served as an Education Resource Officer in the U.S. Department of Education and as an Assistant Director, Policy Branch in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Department of Homeland Security. Her efforts and assistance on creating the Grants Career Path Guide for the DHS Components alongside the Workforce Development Division were indispensable. Mary was dedicated to her career and understood that public service was both a privilege and sacrifice and her willingness to serve was admirable and truly honorable.
A woman of true class and grace, Mary will always be remembered for being honest and to the point. She will be dearly missed by both her family as well as her work family. She touched a tremendous amount of people throughout her life.
Mary was preceded in death by her dear brother’s, Father Thomas Mahony, O.S.A. and William P. Mahony. She is survived by four nephews, Michael Mahony of New Jersey, Paul Mahony, John Mahony, Thomas Mahony, all of Florida, and two nieces, Diane Mahony and Elaine Mahony of Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Little Flower, Bethesda, Maryland on Monday, October 31st at noon. Burial service will take place on Wednesday, November 3rd at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery located in Springfield, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fr. George F. Riley, O.S.A.
