It is with overwhelming sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Melvin Rovens, 79, of Gaithersburg, MD. Mel transitioned peacefully from this life on October 2, 2026. Mel is survived by his wife Dalila; daughter Lisa; his family by marriage including Dalia’s three children and nine grandchildren; and countless family & friends who will miss him dearly.
Mel was born on December 11, 1946, to David & Ella Rovens in Philadelphia, PA. His parents were hardworking small business owners and Mel would often share fond memories of working in his parents’ delicatessen during his teenage years. He survived both his parents and to know Mel was to know he loved his parents deeply.
After high school, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for four years, including one year in Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before leaving the Marines and enrolling in college.
During his career he worked 23 years for the United States Department of Labor under the Office of Inspector General Department of Audit. During this time, he traveled frequently for work, which he had found during his time with the Marines that he greatly enjoyed.
He had many interests and lived life to the fullest. He was an avid traveler and planned wonderful trips for his loved ones. He’s visited dozens of countries and documented his travels in detail, including photos and write-ups which we will cherish and are so thankful for. He enjoyed dancing, music, movies, taking in a Broadway show, and prioritized living a healthy lifestyle. Daily workouts and simple pleasures such as going for a walk were always on his “to do” list, which he was known for writing daily, without fail.
Mel, who would playfully call himself “Mel from Hell” was a gentle, kind, and loving man who brought so much joy to his family and friends. He was full of life, playful, curious, and always had a kind word or a silly joke for those around him. He had many “Mel-isms”, or funny sayings that he got a kick out of and would make himself laugh. His laughter was infectious, making it impossible not to laugh with him. Those “Mel-isms” have become a beloved part of the family vernacular.
One of the most inspiring aspects about who Mel was as a person was his passion to be the best version of himself that he could. He was optimistic and positive and the best support person to have in your corner. He was an honorable man that lived a life with integrity and passion.
His legacy is an inspiration and he will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
