“Tish”
On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, Tish passed peacefully surrounded by family in Washington, DC.
Beloved wife and mother, she is survived by her husband of 45 years, John (“Jack”) Gaine, and three
children, Courtney Cuddy (Chris) of Decatur, IL, Margaret Hough (Michael) of Dublin, Ireland and
John Gaine (Carissa) of Bethesda. Affectionately called “Tpoo” by seven adoring grandchildren, each
of whom carry on her bountiful wit and wisdom, she leaves behind Elizabeth, Gwendolen,
Christopher “Fitz”, John “Judge”, Patrick, Ann McBride (“Bridie”) and John (“Jack”) as well as three
bonus grandchildren she was so proud of, Carson, Caroline and Connor. She is also survived by her
siblings, John (Liz), Kathleen, Jimmy (Brenda) and Ann (Don) as well as countless in-laws, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Born in Manhattan, NY on July 14, 1947, the youngest of seven children, she was raised in
Larchmont, NY, graduating from Holy Child in Rye, NY and Columbia University School of Nursing.
Always a New Yorker at heart, she adapted and cherished the slower pace and community of
Bethesda where she raised her family for the past 45 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Kathleen Croke, sisters Margaret (“Peggy”)
McEneany and Ellen Geraghty, and grandson John Connolly Gaine.
The ultimate caretaker and hostess, Tish spent her young adulthood in nursing, transitioning to a
life dedicated to raising her children and opening her home and heart to anyone that needed it. Tish
never passed up an opportunity to dance, laugh and cheer on her children at numerous athletic
events.
Always making friends wherever she went, a special thank you to her newest “friends” at
Georgetown University Hospital for the loving and spiritual care, treating her as if she were family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, June 24 at 11:00 A.M.
at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3630 Quesada St NW. A Celebration of
Life will follow. A viewing will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 23 at the Shrine of
the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Joy of Motion Dance Studio, 1333 H
Street NE, Washington, DC 20002.
