On Friday, July 7, 2023, Paul Patrick (Pat) Mooney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 90. Pat was born in Salamanca, New York on March 21, 1933, the son of Paul and Edna Mooney. He is survived by his sons Kevin Mooney (Janine), and Timothy Mooney, daughters Kathleen Mooney (Tom), Patricia Matheus (Richard), and Maureen Fisher (Donald); grandchildren Matthew (Hiba), Michael, and Kevin Mooney, Derek (Gaby) and Sean Hackney, Anna, Joseph (Mabel), and Linda Matheus, and Katherine Fisher; and great-grandchildren Lelia and Sophia Mooney and Chasa and Reese Matheus. Pat is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 50 years, Helen, and granddaughter Ashley Fisher.
Upon graduation from Salamanca High School, Pat earned a B.S. in Mathematics from St. Bonaventure University. Shortly after graduation, he married the love of his life, Helen Yaworsky, also from Salamanca. Pat joined the United States Army, proudly serving his country for two years. After his military service as an officer assigned to the Nike Air Missile Station in Hamburg, NY, Pat returned to Salamanca as a high school math teacher and football coach, which he always referred to fondly when telling stories about his various jobs throughout his life. In 1958, Pat got an exciting offer to join International Business Machines (IBM) in Owego, NY, which he described as the “luckiest break ever”. In 1968 he transferred to the IBM Gaithersburg, MD location. One of the proudest accomplishments of his thirty-one-year career with IBM was his involvement with the IBM Space Program and specifically his work on the Gemini Onboard Computer project which designed and built the first onboard computer to perform complex calculations that helped astronauts guide and maneuver their spacecraft. After retiring from IBM, Pat worked for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in Rockville, MD for several years before deciding to officially retire and devote his time to his favorite passion, “Number One Fan” for his ten grandchildren and, more recently, his four great-grandchildren. Pat and Helen never missed a game, performance, or special event and were well-known throughout the area for cheering on their family.
Pat was a lifelong athlete who enjoyed skiing, and playing baseball, football, tennis, racquetball, and golf. He was an enthusiastic competitor, even playing in a senior softball league until his early eighties. Pat shared his love of sports with his children and grandchildren and never hesitated to offer expert advice and encouragement to all. Pat’s passion for sports was insatiable and he always was queued up for the next sports broadcast, especially his favorite team, the New York Yankees.
Pat’s love of all things Irish and his interest in genealogy were legendary and he could always be counted on for a good story about his heritage. His Catholic faith and devotion to his family were extremely important to him, both were a primary source of peace and happiness to him. Pat was a man who could always be counted on, and his love and support for his family, friends, and community were admirable and unwavering. He was dedicated to his volunteer work as a member of the board of directors for Family Services, Inc., Montgomery Station for fifteen years. Even in his final years, Pat was building relationships and touching many lives, especially at Tribute at Black Hill. Pat’s family is grateful to the kind and dedicated staff at Tribute who welcomed him, laughed at his jokes, and took good care of him.
