Pei was born on September 20, 1943, in Linhai, Zhejiang Province, China. She spent her childhood in Zhejiang and Shanghai and demonstrated an adventurous and independent spirit from an early age. At just 16, she traveled on her own across China to the western part of the country. At 18, she met her future husband, Xiang-Ming Sun, and at 20, she became a mother. Pei and Xiang-Ming later settled in Lanzhou, where they lived for more than 30 years and raised their three children, Haiying Sun, Yan Sun, and Jennifer Sun.
Pei worked as an accountant in China. In 1990, she immigrated to the United States with her husband and their youngest daughter, Jennifer, settling in Rockville, Maryland. Unable to continue her accounting career because of the language barrier, Pei worked as a restaurant helper and cashier, in hotel housekeeping, and later as a babysitter and housekeeper. She worked tirelessly to support her family and to provide her children with better educational opportunities and the foundation to build independent lives. Pei was intelligent, curious, talented, and a lifelong learner. She loved reading, puzzles and riddles, sewing, knitting, and drawing, and was admired for her beautiful handwriting. Her interests ranged from history, politics, and religion to science, geography, astronomy, poetry, and philosophy. When declining eyesight eventually prevented her from reading, she continued her love of learning through audiobooks.
Above all, Pei was devoted to her family. Her daughter Jennifer remembers a mother who always gave the best food to her children while saving less for herself, washed the family's clothes by hand through cold winters, made clothes for her daughter for school, and once ran through a storm in search of a better school for her. These acts reflected the way Pei lived her life: working, sacrificing, and always striving to give her children greater opportunities.
A serious car accident in 2002 greatly affected Pei's mobility. She also lived with Parkinson's disease for more than 20 years and faced many health complications in her later life. Her family mourns her deeply while finding comfort in knowing that she is now free from the pain and physical struggles she endured for so many years.
Pei is survived by her husband, Xiang-Ming Sun; her children, Haiying Sun, Yan Sun, and Jennifer Sun; her grandchildren, Yongrui Lee, and Ziyou Sun; and her great-grandchildren, Linda Lee and Daniel Lee. Her three children all live in Maryland, close to the parents who devoted so much of their lives to them.
Pei will be remembered for her strength, independence, intellectual curiosity, resilience, and deep devotion to her family. Her journey took her from a small town in Zhejiang across China and eventually across the Pacific to Maryland, but throughout every chapter of her life, her greatest commitment remained the well-being and future of her family.
Her funeral will be held on September 20, 2026—the day she would have celebrated her 83rd birthday.
May she rest in peace, free from suffering, and may her love, sacrifices, and strength live on through the generations of the family she worked so hard to nurture.
