
Raymond Graham McDowall, Jr., 76, of Germantown, MD, passed away on February 2, 2017. Born to Anna Mae and Raymond Graham McDowall, Sr., on June 19, 1940, in Massachusetts. After graduating from West Point in 1962, Raymond served in the U.S. Army, going on many, many tours in Korea and Vietnam. He then worked for the U.S. Government for Concepts Analysis for more than 25 years, and received his Master’s Degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Raymond was very accomplished in his civil service career. He worked as a consultant for George H.W. Bush in Operation Desert Storm, and he supervised the nuclear reactor at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Raymond passed on his expertise by serving as a professor at Montgomery College in Rockville for 30 years. A master of nine languages, Raymond was once a five-day champion on Jeopardy. He was also a supporter of international children’s funds.
Raymond was a dedicated family man who opened his heart to many. He was known affectionately as “Bumpy” to his grandchildren, whom he adored, and was known for his sense of humor. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Diane B. McDowall; beloved father of Stacy McDowall and Laurel Powell, son-in-law Shawn Powell, and daughter-of-the-heart Teresa Lewis ; cherished grandfather of Megan Powell, Shannon Powell, and Brandon Powell; brother of Carol Ensign and Katherine Harsh; special uncle to Wendy Moore and Mike Ensign. He will be remembered by many, many relatives and friends.
The family will hold a private memorial service and an inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Raymond’s name to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital at www.shrinershospitals.org/Donate.
