Robert “Bob” Martin McDonnell passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final days. The oldest of five, Bob was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx. Bob’s early years were shaped by faith, education, and the importance of family. He attended St. Philip Neri School, graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1960, and went on to earn his degree in English Literature from Iona University in 1964.
Bob served his country with honor during the Vietnam War era, stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. Army. Following his military service, Bob began a long and successful career at The Bank of New York, where he rose through the ranks to retire as a Vice President after more than 20 years.
With his move to Spring Lake, Bob thoroughly enjoyed his retired life at the Jersey Shore. He joined the Manasquan Elks, played his share of golf, walked the boardwalk and hosted family throughout the summers. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his beloved grandsons—Ian, Bobby, and Finn. He cherished their time together, treating them to days at the beach, and sharing his love of baseball and the Yankees. Bob also had a lifelong passion for the stock market and made annual pilgrimages to Saratoga. Bob is survived by his devoted son, Kevin, daughter-in-law, Nora, aforementioned grandsons, sister, Joan, brother-in-law, Greg and an army of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Thomas and his sister, Maureen. Bob’s life will be honored on Monday, June 23rd, 2025. A viewing will take place at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 am at Holy Redeemer Church, 9705 Summit Ave, Kensington, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bob’s memory to Cardinal Hayes High School, 650 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451.
