On February 5, 2024, Ruth Stubbs Denlinger, 86, passed away after a sudden, brief illness. Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 18, 1937, Ruth was the daughter of Dr. Evan L. Stubbs and Mary Lodema Carothers.
Ruth graduated from Roanoke College, after which she taught elementary school. An avid field hockey player in high school and college, Ruth also played tennis throughout her life and followed professional tennis with a passion. For several years, Ruth served as a volunteer tending flower beds on the grounds of the National Cathedral. She loved travel, particularly travel to London where she might get a glimpse of the Queen, sipping Hu Kwa tea, flowers and feeding friends and family. Some can still taste her legendary chocolate cake.
Married to Nelson C. Denlinger in 1966 she became his devoted partner, while continuing to help educate children as a math tutor. Ruth and Nelson had no children of their own, but their home became the “go to” house in the neighborhood for children of all ages. They embraced their many Denlinger nieces and nephews, as well, taking an interest in their educational and professional accomplishments. Many of them will look back fondly on beach week, when two large households of Denlinger’s converged to rest, relax, and catch up with one another.
Ruth was proud of her Quaker heritage and the core beliefs of the faith: integrity, equality, simplicity, community, stewardship of the Earth, and peace. She cheerfully supported causes she believed in. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her husband’s siblings and their spouses, Ruth will be sorely missed by her many friends, family members, and neighbors.
A celebration of life will be held on March 9, 2024. In lieu of flowers consider a contribution in Ruth’s name to one of the following worthy organizations: Adventist HealthCare Home Care Services, National Cathedral, New York Public Library, or Ocean Conservancy.
