February 20, 1999 - October 4, 2022
Tyler Lightcap passed away Tuesday morning, October 4, 2022, at the age of 23. Born in Rockville, Maryland, Tyler was the son of Brenda Lightcap (DuRell) and Gregg Lightcap and brother to Theodore “Buddy” Sabate and Cori Anne (Sabate) Russell. He grew up in Montgomery County and attended kindergarten through 8th grade at St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda and high school at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, Class of 2017. After high school, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Recreation and Sports Management at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina.
Throughout Tyler’s childhood, he was always an athlete; baseball, basketball and football… he was truly a team player. While Tyler loved being on the field, his true passion came to life as a coach and mentor for young kids. He excelled as a leader and combined with his genuine joy for serving others, found his stride as a camp counselor for the Montgomery County Safety Patrol Leadership Camp sponsored by AAA and the Montgomery County Department of Police. There, Tyler became a quintessential part of the elite team of counselors who assist in shaping tomorrow’s young leaders. “Mr. Tyler”, as the campers foundly called him, was a teddy-bear, a best friend, a warrior… a chief who had great expectations of his young campers and made them rise to the occasion and learn to accept leadership and responsibility with pride! Often being described as the “Key to the Tribe,” Tyler was a camp counselor at Patrol Camp summers of 2016-2019.
Tyler’s passion for sports and working with youth led him to his most recent position as the Varsity Assistant Coach of the Paint Branch High School baseball team, as well as individual lessons. All who knew Tyler felt the warmth of every smile and hug! He was a dedicated uncle, who never missed a family event, especially the soccer games of Kennedi and Sloane. He often expressed a desire to coach all his nieces in their sports.
Tyler is so deeply loved, and survived by parents Brenda and Gregg Lightcap, brother- Theodore “Buddy” Sabate (Lauren), his sister- Cori Anne Russell (Paul), grandmother- Dolores “Maw-Maw” Lightcap, grandfather, Jim “PopPop” DuRell and his “niece squad”: Sloane, Kennedi, Finley and Harper. Many beloved extended family: Pam Bernier (Norm), Daniel Bernier, Jimmy and Jenna DuRell, Steven Lightcap (Tammy), Lauren, Lucas, and Lindsey Lightcap, Carolyn Lightcap (Mark), Benjamin R., as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family.
Tyler has rejoined his loved ones Judith “Nan-Nan’ DuRell, Jeffrey DuRell, William James “PawPaw” Lightcap.
