Vera June Green (née Pettit), a proud fourth-generation Washingtonian, passed away peacefully at the age of 98. Born in April 1927 in Washington, D.C., she was the cherished daughter of Russell “Buddy” and Frances Pettit.
Vera was raised in Hyattsville, Maryland and graduated from Eastern High School. She went on to attend the University of Maryland, where she was a devoted member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. It was there she met the love of her life, James Edward Green, Jr. They were married on May 31, 1952, at the Cathedral in Baltimore, Maryland.
Her early married life took her to Cleveland, Ohio, where Jim worked for the FBI. They returned to Hyattsville for the birth of their first son, James E. Green III, and later settled in Adelphi, Maryland in 1955, where they welcomed two more sons, Michael J. Green and Russell T. Green. In 1966, the family moved to Silver Spring, where Vera was an active member of St. John’s Parish and built a warm and welcoming home.
Throughout her life, Vera worked for various banking institutions in both Washington, D.C. and Silver Spring, and in 2007, she moved to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
She was the beloved wife of the late James E. Green, Jr., with whom she shared 67 beautiful years of marriage. Vera is survived by her loving children: James E. Green III (Mary Lou), Michael J. Green (Cindy Ann), and Russell T. Green (Cindy Lee). She was a devoted grandmother to Joseph M. Green (Iana), Kevin F. Green (Shea), Travis and Tristan Green, and Tiffany Hevner (Ryan), and a joyful great-grandmother to Benny, Teddy, Isabella, and Luke Green, and Tanner and Ashlynn Hevner.
Vera had a zest for life and loved to travel, particularly with the FBI and on group tours, forming countless friendships along the way.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 520 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, MD. She will be laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she will be reunited with her beloved Jim.
