Mr. Joel Edward Cowart

Joel Edward Cowart, 80, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, June 21, 2013. Joel was born in Savannah to Jesse and Frances Cowart. Joel was passionate about Savannah and he was proud to have lived most of his life in the beautiful and historic city.

Joel spent many hours on the Savannah River working as a boiler maker. He enjoyed photography and building a home for his wife, Karen. During the Korean War, he served with his brother, Herbert in the Army’s 118th Field Artillery Reserves. He was also a long-time member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. “Daddy Joe” loved telling stories of his childhood to his children. Joel also loved and cherished his very special cat, Tom.

Joel was a loving and devoted husband and is survived by his wife, Alicia Karen Slack Cowart. He was a proud and caring father of 10 children. Joel is survived by his son Joel Berry of San Antonio, TX; his daughter Helen Steil and her husband Kevin, of Mexia, TX; his daughter Opal Adams of Lockhart, TX; his daughter Sherry Hood of Logan, IA; his son Leo Cowart of TX; his son Joe Cowart of TX; his daughter Jannice Rios of TX; his daughter Dorothy Berham of TX; his son Andy Cowart and his daughter Amanda Maddox, both of Savannah, GA; and two stepsons Major William Slack, Tia Nicole of PA and Ricky Slack and his wife Christi of Savannah. Joel is also survived by two brothers of Savannah, Robert and Gordon, and by 23 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Frances, two brothers, Wesley and Herbert, and by two sisters, Marilee Williams and June Mason, and sister-in-law, Kathryn Wheeler

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the Fairhaven Funeral Home located at 2794 Hwy 80 W, Garden City, GA. Funeral services will be held directly after visitation from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Joel will be laid to rest at the Black Creek Cemetery in Ellabell. Donations may be made to the Savannah Moose Lodge, # 1550.
