Peggy was born in Long Island, New York in 1923 and moved to Savannah with her family in 1933. Her first job was with Adler's Department Store followed by a bookkeeping job with C & S Bank. In August, 1946, she met the love of her life, William L. "Bob" Barbee and they married four months later. Bob preceded her in death in 2007 and they were blessed with sixty years of marriage. Peggy was a wonderful homemaker, devoted mother and wife, fabulous cook, could expertly sew and crochet and much to everyone's surprise, could build cabinets and even remodel a house! Christmas was her favorite holiday and she loved to fill her home with her many handmade decorations. She was also an avid reader and puzzle-solver and loved to play Parcheesi. She played the guitar and raised her beautiful voice in songs of praise to the Lord. She and Bob loved to fish by themselves or with friends, especially Joanne. They also loved to duck hunt together. She was a life-long Catholic and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and then the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. She went to the Cathedral Day School in her early years in Savannah and attended Mass every day.
Peggy had three daughters: Margaret "Peaches" Barbee, Joyce Barbee Baker (Ralph
Alan) and Mary Barbee Cantrell (Joe). She loved her sons-in-law like they were her own children and always looked forward to her nightly hug from Joe. She is also survived by a very special sister-in-law and daughter-of-the-heart Judith (Betty) Lewis, wife of the late William Lewis (Bill) and by her daughter-of-the-heart Mary Ann Wolfe (daughter of Peggy's late sister Anita and brother-in-law Cody Smith) and her wonderful husband Nathan, great nephew Nathan Wolfe II and his wife Carlene, and great niece Cindy Byrnes Rizetta, her husband Bill, and their sons and Peggy's great-great nephews Bryan and Bradley. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret McKenna Lewis, sisters Frances Algio (Bill) , Anita Smith (Cody), Dorothy Bostock (Arthur) and Janet Waggoner, brothers William Lewis(Betty), Earl Lewis (Polly) and Kenneth Lewis. She is survived by brothers Charles "Lindy" Lewis (Jean), Richard "Dickey' Lewis (Brenda), Edward Lewis, and Raymond Lewis (Arlene), numerous nieces and nephews both in Savannah and in North Carolina.
