Arturo Contreras Cerda

My dad, Arturo Contreras Cerda, was born on April 2, 1946, in a small town in Purepero, Michoacán, Mexico. He was the son of Emilio Contreras Mora and Aurora Cerda Martinez. As the oldest of 10 children, he probably took on the role of caring for his younger siblings, which definitely made him the caring person we all knew.

Dad was always a hard worker. He came to America at 17 and initially worked in agriculture before becoming a heavy truck driver years later. He spent 39 years working and then retired as a truck driver, providing for his family. After retirement, he moved to Spring, Texas, where he loved the outdoors and would visit family in California whenever he could.

In his mid-thirties, he had his own cows and goats on his cousin’s ranch in Rosarito. He loved the ranch style life to where making fresh cheese was fun and easy for him. Years later, he had his own chickens, roosters, and a horse in Michoacán. He loved going camping anywhere he could set up a tent and build a campfire. On some of his camping trips, he would take his favorite grill, which my grandfather Emilio had given him. I think dad always wanted to be a cowboy.

Dad was a huge Dodger baseball fan and enjoyed listening to them on the radio or watching them on TV whenever he could. Dad also loved ocean cruises and playing slot machines at the casinos. He enjoyed all-you-can-eat buffets and always loved a good steak. Dad was a man of deep Catholic faith. He didn’t go to church regularly, but he was an honest and righteous man. If I had 4 words to describe dad it would be Kind, Reserved, Warrior and Provider. Stubborn and Grumpy come into mind but those were his outer layers.

Arturo Contreras Cerda was a wonderful father to four boys and six girls, from two different marriages. He is a grandfather to 24 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 17 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his lovely wife, Lidia Contreras and his faithful yorkie Hacchi.

Pasó 39 años trabajando y luego se jubiló como troquero, manteniendo a su familia. Después de jubilarse, se mudó a Spring, Texas, donde amaba el aire libre y visitaba a su familia en California siempre que podía.

A mediados de sus treinta años, tenía sus propias vacas y cabras en el rancho de su primo en Rosarito. Le encantaba la vida al estilo rancho, donde hacer queso fresco era divertido y fácil para él. Años más tarde, tuvo sus propios gallos, gallinas y un caballo en Michoacan. Le encantaba ir a acampar a cualquier lugar donde pudiera montar una tienda de campaña y hacer una fogata. En algunos de sus viajes de campamento, se llevaba su parrilla favorita, que mi abuelo Emilio le había dado. Creo que papá siempre quiso ser vaquero.

Mi padre era un gran fanático del béisbol de los Dodgers y disfrutaba escuchándolos en la radio o viéndolos en la televisión siempre que podía. A papá también le encantaban los cruceros por el mar y jugar a las máquinas tragamonedas en los casinos. Disfrutaba de los buffets con todo lo que puedas comer y siempre le encantaba un buen bistec. Papá era un hombre de profunda fe católica. No iba a la iglesia con regularidad, pero era un hombre honesto y justo. Si tuviera 4 palabras para describir a papá, sería amable, reservado, guerrero y proveedor. Terco y gruñón

vienen a la mente, pero esas eran sus capas exteriores.

Arturo Contreras Cerda fue un padre maravilloso de cuatro hijos y seis hijas, de dos matrimonios diferentes. Es abuelo de 24 nietos y bisabuelo de 17 bisnietos. Le sobreviven su encantadora esposa, Lidia Contreras y su fiel yorkie Hacchi.

Visitation will be held at Dimond & Shannon Mortuary, 10630 Chapman Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92840, US, on July 16, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, followed by the Blessing at the same location on July 16, 2026, from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church , 566 S. Glassell St., Orange, CA 92866 US, on July 17, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

A Graveside Service will follow at Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd, Westminster, CA 92683, US, on July 17, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
