Born on July 25, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts, Dan spent his youth on the West Coast, graduating from Western High School in June 1965.
Following high school, Dan answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army. He served with honor and distinction as a Field Artillery Senior Sergeant (Cannon Crew Member), embodying loyalty, leadership, and discipline throughout his military service.
After his service, Dan returned home to build a life centered around love and family. On April 4, 1970, he married Katherine Ann Powell, with whom he shared over three decades of deep devotion and raised his beloved children. Sadly, Dan was widowed when Katherine passed away on July 7, 2001.
Love found Dan a second time when he met Christine Ahlstrand Fischer. The two were married on February 19, 2005, beginning a beautiful new chapter filled with shared adventures, travel, and a deeply blended family.
Dan earned his AA degree from Long Beach City College and worked in the machine tool and water jet industry for over 40 years. He serviced customers mainly in Southern California but also traveled internationally to Asia and the Middle East. He retired from Flow International Corp. in 2015. However, his loyal customers were in such need of his expertise that he started his own business, DHB Services, Inc., in 2015 and continued working until 2025 when health issues made it necessary to close.
An adventurer at heart, Dan’s greatest passions were being out on the water and exploring the world. He was an avid sailor who found immense peace and joy navigating the open sea. When he wasn't charting new waters or traveling to new destinations, Dan’s favorite place to be was surrounded by his large, bustling family. He was a proud and doting grandfather who cherished every moment spent making memories with his grandchildren.
Dan’s legacy of service, resilience, and unconditional love lives on through his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Christine Bates; his son, Daniel Bates/Susan; his daughter, Theresa Gomez/John; his stepsons, Brian Fischer/Nancy and Josh Fischer/Nicole; and his stepdaughter, Bonnie Fischer/Aaron Davis. He also leaves behind his 12 grandchildren, who will forever cherish their grandfather's adventurous spirit and gentle guidance.
Dan, you are deeply missed, but your story lives on in the hearts of those who loved you.
