Sondra was born in Kentucky in 1945 to Robert Check and Jennie (Warman) Check. In 1949, when Sondra was just 4 years old, her family embarked on a journey that brought them to Southern California, where they settled in a blossoming suburban community in Lynwood. Sondra attended Dominguez High School, and after graduating, she pursued her passion, becoming a licensed cosmetologist. Known for her skill and creativity, she spent two decades as a hairstylist in Huntington Beach, where she made her home.
After retiring from cosmetology, Sondra found fulfillment in serving her community. For the past 17 years, she dedicated her time and talents to Mid-Cities Baptist Church, where she served as a devoted secretary. Her commitment to her church family reflected her deep-rooted faith and love for others.
Sondra was a loving, caring, and hardworking individual, always willing to go the extra mile for her family and friends. Her love for studying the Bible was evident in the values she lived by. Sondra enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, often gathering with friends and family for meals, impeccably dressed in her signature long skirts, exuding grace and femininity.
Above all, her greatest joy came from her relationships. Sondra cherished her children, sisters, cousins, and her church family. Her legacy of love, compassion, and faith will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
Sondra is survived by her son Eric Pettner and daughter-in-law Jessica Pettner; her sister Roberta Ihsen and brother-in-law Ronald Ihsen; and her nieces and cousins. She is preceded by her sister Karen McNab and her parents Robert and Jennie.
A memorial service to celebrate Sondra's life will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Mid Cities Baptist Church in Westminster, CA.
