Betty Sue (Drury) Rayfield, 83, of Gastonia, North Carolina entered the gates of Heaven on Wednesday March 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Gastonia, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow and Faye (Bynum) Drury. She worked for Sacred Heart College and Holy Angels for over 40 years. Betty was a long-time member of McAdenville Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the piano.
Mrs. Rayfield enjoyed trips to the local fish camps with her family on Saturday nights, getting Tony’s ice cream with her granddaughters, and fixing homemade banana pudding. A long Saturday afternoon drive to the mountains or weekend trips to the beach camping were a few of Betty’s favorite pastimes.
Mrs. Rayfield’s family was her pride and joy. She loved spending quality time with her triplet granddaughters Kaitlyn, Jordan, and MacKenzie, especially her great-granddaughter, Indie Rae Flanagan, who she recently welcomed last August. From the moment her granddaughters were born, Betty made a special trip every day after work to visit and to ensure she was blessed to see every milestone of their life. One could always find Betty shopping for a new outfit for any and every occasion. Most importantly, Mrs. Rayfield was a Godly woman who kept her faith strong and committed.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her sister Brenda (Drury) Buckner and brother-in-law Donald A. Buckner.
Mrs. Rayfield is survived by her husband of 62 years, Alfred “Punchy” Rayfield of the home, her sons, Robert “Todd” Rayfield of the home and her son and daughter-in-law: Kenneth and Mary Kay Rayfield of Hickory, North Carolina. Her legacy includes her three granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Isaiah) Flanagan of Concord, North Carolina, Jordan Rayfield (fiancé Trevor Gragg) of Hickory, North Carolina, and MacKenzie Rayfield (fiancé Aaron Smith) of Hickory, North Carolina. She has one great-granddaughter, Indie Rae Flanagan of Concord, North Carolina.
A private viewing will be held on Saturday March 16, 2024, at Carothers Funeral Home at Gaston Memorial Park. The public is invited to a graveside service at 12:00 pm in The Evergreen Garden of Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 South New Hope Road, Gastonia.
Reverend Walt Griggs, from McAdenville Baptist Church, will officiate. Serving as her pallbearers are hers sons, Kenneth Rayfield and Todd Rayfield as well as Eddie Jenkins, Isaiah Flanagan, Trevor Gragg, and Aaron Smith.
