Mr. Free was a native of Habersham County Georgia and was the son of the late Carl and Molly Baker Free.
Mr. Free was known as “Pop the Candy Man”, he loved building bird houses and yard swings and was retired from Firestone Mills.
He was a member of South Gastonia Church of God.
Mr. Free is survived by a daughter; Dawn Parker and husband Ron of Gastonia, a son; Billy G. Free of Charlotte, a daughter-in-law Brenda Faye Free of Dallas, two sisters; Mildred Gunn of Demorest, GA, Connie Woods Cornelia, GA, six grandchildren; Teresa Butler and Steve, Crystal Hall and Dennis, Darren Free, Joseph Taylor, Belinda Ceol, Michelle Overby, eight great grandchildren; Ashley Cloninger, Kristen Butler, Brittany Hall, Trey Hall, Cody Ceol, Ethan Marr, Emory Marr and Emma Ham.
Mr. Free was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 70 years Grace Crunkleton Free, a son Clarence Edward Free, Jr., grandson Chad Overby, and a number of brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at South Gastonia Church of God with Rev. Bobby Gilley, Rev. Ray Loftis and Rev. Sam Barnette officiating. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Wednesday at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.
