Do Bin Kwon
April 16, 1923 – January 2, 2020
Do Bin Kwon passed away on Thursday January 2, 2020 after reaching the age of 96 years old. After a sudden decline in health, he died peacefully after praying with his son at his bedside.
Do Bin was born on April 16, 1923 in Pyongyang, North Korea to the late Hu Young Kwon and Keum Yeo Cho. As a young man he learned the value of hard work. Upon graduating high school, he escaped to Shanghai and worked for the Japanese bank. After World War II he returned to South Korea to work for the American embassy.
In 1951, he met the love of his life, Sang Soon. They lived together for 59 years. During the last 10 years of Sang Soon’s life, Do Bin was a dedicated caretaker to her and was at her bedside daily from morning until night. Together they had three children: a daughter Ilson K. Lim, Hee Sung Kwon, and Hee Jung Kwon.
Do Bin was a strong patriarch of his family. He was a dedicated husband and a good father who taught his children the importance of hard work and did his best to teach and guide them. At times he had to live abroad from his family to support them. In 1967 he left for Vietnam to work for the American Government and a few years later he joined a cruise company in order to immigrate to the United States. After living apart from his family for 5 years, he was able to bring his family to the United States.
In the United States he was further able to build his legacy. He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Left behind to cherish the memories and legacy of Do Bin Kwon are: his daughter Ilson K. Lim and her husband Young Joon Lim, son Hee Sung Kwon and his wife Ok Hui Kwon, son Hee Jung Kwon and his wife Jung Mi Kwon, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Do Bin was not a man of many words, but a man who spoke through his actions. He was modest and always put others first; a man who would give the shirt on his back to a friend in need. He loved sports, cooking and eating, and traveling.
The most valuable lesson he taught his family is to love and follow Christ. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and others who loved him and knew him.
