Edward Andy Calvert, age 89, of Belmont, passed away at his home on Monday, June 3, 2024. After years of fighting like a great warrior, Ed saw Jesus and it took his breath away. While we mourn his loss greatly, others are rejoicing over his arrival behind the veil.
Ed grew up mostly in the North Belmont community and attended school there. He was a pitcher for the Acme mill baseball teams in the early/mid 1950's, where he was often known as "Lefty". Ed was a Master Carpenter by trade. He worked for himself for many years, but worked for Beam Construction in Cherryville for about 20 years, retiring in the mid 1990's. His talents can be seen at numerous schools, churches, and other municipal buildings in our surrounding area. Before his failing health, he loved yard sales and auctions. Ed was known over the years for his sweet and smooth tenor voice, being a part of a local gospel singing group known as The Gosheneers.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Wade and Cornelia Bell Calvert; his children's mother, Frances Ashe Calvert; siblings, J C Calvert, Sue Calvert Hooker Carswell and Melvin Calvert.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Burcham Calvert; children, Eddie (Debbie) Calvert and Donna Calvert (Larry) Harris of Belmont, NC; step sons, Rodney (Amy) Lewis of Stanley, NC and Jeremy (Marci) Lewis of Mullica Hill, NJ; brother, Rev. William (Mary Ann) Calvert of Lowell, NC; grandchildren, Jonathan (Erin) Calvert, Jeffrey (Nikki) Calvert, Ashley (Jason) Lineberger, Wade (Anna) Harris, Madison (Hunter) Mitchem, Mason and Meredith Lewis, Jackson (Destiny) Lewis, Hunter, Emma, Ava and Bo Lewis; as well as 13 great grandchildren.
