Glenda Marlene McSwain

Glenda Marlene “Marty” McSwain, age 92 passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, at Morningside Assisted Living-Gastonia. She was born on July 13, 1934, in Gaston County to the late Fred P. & Carrie Barnhill.

Marty was a retired elementary school teacher and a lifetime member at Flint-Groves Baptist Church where she was involved in various ministries. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma, maw-maw and Gi-Gi and loved spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband George McSwain Jr; her sister Betty Lewis; and her brothers Fred, Ralph and Paul Barnhill.

She is survived by her 3 children David McSwain (Jean), Michael McSwain (Charissa) and Susan Newton (Eric). Her 7 grandchildren, Melissa Keever (Ricky), Michelle McSwain (Matt), Jason Newton (Amanda), Cara McCord (Zack), Meredith McSwain (Joe), Stacie Blanco (Julio) and Sydney Newton. Her 5 great grandchildren, Karli, Isaac, Eliza, Felix and Ronen. A celebration of life will be held later.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to Morningside Assisted Living of Gastonia for taking such good care of mom for the past 4 ½ years. She truly looked at that place as her home. We would also like to thank Hospice of Lincolnton, Peak Resources in Cherryville and Ella Lynch for their devoted care at the end of her life.
