

Guss Cleveland Harper, 79, passed away August 10, 2016 at Carolinas Medical center in Charlotte. He was born on April 11, 1937 in Gaston County to the late Grady O. Harper and Mamie Arrowood Harper. Guss was a graduate of Biscayne Southern College, where he received an Associate’s Degree in Business. He graduated from Mt. Holly High School. He served three years in the United States Marine Reserves, four years active duty in the United States Navy, and two years in the United States Navy Reserves.
Guss was the former owner of Stine Gear and Machine Company, which he helped establish in 1970. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #263 and also served on the board of Directors for the Spencer Mountain Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Guss loved the Lord. He was an active member of Plainview Baptist Church in Dallas, NC with a vision for church growth and a love for people of all ages. He was an ordained deacon for more than 40 years. Guss enjoyed working with the RA’s, and played and umpired church and industrial softball.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia Flowers Harper of Dallas; children, Brian Harper (Suzette) of Bessemer City and Lisa Facemyer (Shane) of Hendersonville; sister, Barbara Lawing (Benny) of Mt. Holly; grandchildren, Megan Hagedorn (Brandon), Caitlin Facemyer, Tony Davis (Emily) and Benjamin Facemyer; great-grandchildren, Maja Jade and Wolf Shane; sisters-in-law, Wanda Johnston and Luellen Harper; many close nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by three siblings, Patricia Voneda Moose, Colin Harper and Roy Harper.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Plainview Baptist Church in Dallas, NC. Rev. Mark Hovis will preside. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service.
Guss’ greatest desire was for everyone to come to know Jesus. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions are made to Plainview Baptist Church in Dallas, NC or to 106.9 The Light (WMIT).
