James “Goodie” Goodman, 86, of Ranlo died peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Goodie loved his family most of all. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. Goodie liked to be busy. He built and raced his own dirt track racecar. He loved baseball and he was a huge Atlanta Braves fan. He used to hunt and fish. Goodie supported his community by being a volunteer firefighter, an EMT and a councilman for Ranlo. Goodie lived his life to the fullest. He will be dearly missed by many.

Goodie was the son of the late Fannie (Lovett) and John Goodman. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mercedee (Bumgardner) Goodman. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters; Yvonne Crook, Donna Jones and husband Rick and Terry Talley and husband Rabun. Goodie also leaves behind four grandchildren; Shelley, Scott, Ashley and Abby and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Life for Goodie will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday March 15, 2018 at United Baptist Church, 1970 Lowell-Bethesda Road, Gastonia. Reverend Ray Pennell will offer words of encouragement and hope for friends and family who gather to remember Goodie.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 P.M. at the church before the celebration of life service.

I remember Mr. Goodman with fond memories of our skating days, and sharing friendship with Yvonne. Mr. Goodman always had such a good sense of humor. I miss those days. My heart and prayers go out to Yvonne and her family at this time. May God comfort you all until Jesus comes for us all, and we can be together forever. How awesome is that. Hallelujah! Goody was such a good person always happy smiling.I never forget when I was in the hospital years ago.He would send me coffee by Yvonne,so I would not have to ask the nurses for it.I love coffee and he made sure I had it while in the hospital. It was a great kindness for me and I will never forget, how nice it was to have coffee when I wanted it He was just that kind of person ,helping anyone who needed it .He loved his sweet wife and family, and always there for them.He will surely be missed. Our loss is heavens gain.It is still very hard to be without those we love so much love Judy Thornburg.
