

Nellie W. Whitesides, 87, of Clover, South Carolina entered the kingdom of heaven to be with her Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ on Tuesday May 21, 2024, at home, under the care of Via Health Partners Hospice. Nellie was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on May 9, 1937 to the late Bessie and James Weaver. Nellie loved her Lord, her family and her church. Professionally, Nellie was involved in Nursing for her entire professional life. She did not retire from Nursing until she was 77 years old. She had more than a 60-year career in nursing. She was the assistant director, and then the director, for the LPN nursing program at the old Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was also one of the four original teachers in Gaston County School’s Health Occupations program. She taught at Hunter Huss High School and her influence touched many young people’s lives.
Nellie was a wise woman and she was always willing to give you her advice, whether solicited or not. Her family says that she was very firm in her beliefs and she did not mind sharing her values and opinions. She never held back and she always told the truth. She loved to travel. She cruised many times and traveled to places such as Ireland, France and Alaska with her friends. Family, friends, her church and all she affected will truly miss her.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Ernest J. Whitesides, preceded her in death. Nellie was one of nine children. Six of her siblings anxiously welcomed her into heaven.
Left to remember Nellie and to carry on her legacy include her daughter, Rhonna (Whitesides) Little and her husband Doug and her sons, Eric Whitesides and his wife Stacy, Brian Whitesides and Mark Whitesides. Nellie’s family legacy includes 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her sisters, Gloria Moore and Linda Corbett are also left behind.
A service celebrating Nellie’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday May 26, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church, 3001 York Highway, Gastonia, NC 28052. The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 pm, at the church. Burial will immediately follow the Celebration of Life Service at in The Garden of Devotion at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 South New Hope Road, Gastonia. Reverend Josh Glandon will officiate.
