Willie was born on December 23, 1932, to P.G. and Berta Mae Savage in Jackson County, Georgia. After attending Ashley High School, she began a long career in textiles working at Firestone Mill. She retired after nearly 37 years of dedicated service. Willie was a member of Yorkwood Church of God in Gastonia.
Willie grew up in a home filled with Gospel music, and music remained a special part of her life. She could often be found singing with her brothers and sister or simply singing on her own. Later, she married her husband, Wilburn E. Summey, who shared her love of music. Together, they enjoyed singing with friends and family in many different places. Among their favorite places to share their music were local nursing homes, where they could bring joy and encouragement to others.
Those who knew Willie will remember her much more than her love of music. She had a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and impeccable timing. She had a unique ability to find humor in even the most ordinary moments and could easily fill a room with laughter. Her presence brought lightness and joy to those around her, and she leaves behind many cherished memories.
In addition to her parents, Willie was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn E. Summey; her brothers, Clyde H. Savage and G. W. “Sonny” Savage and his wife, Jane; her sister, Annie S. Whitlow and her husband, Steve; nephews Jerry Savage and Randy Smith; and niece Kim Smith.
Willie is survived by her stepdaughters, Donna Anderson; Maria Stevens (Jeff); Cindy Runyan (Gregg); and Debbie Barkley (Kevin), all of Gastonia. She is also survived by two nephews and five nieces, along with their families.
