Ada Lee Alley

May 29, 1930April 19, 2011

Ada Lee Alley died on April 19 at home surrounded by her loving family and caregiver.

Ada Lee was a grand lady who was born into humble beginnings in Woodworth, Louisiana on May 29, 1930. Her parents raised 6 children while farming the land; they had chores to do and a creek to play in. She graduated from Lecompte High School in 1947 as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Northwestern State College with a Bachelor of Science in August of 1950.

She was blessed with two children, Bob and Liz, from a previous marriage. Ada and Jim met while she was managing the cafeteria in the Alcoa plant in Port Lavaca, Texas. They married May 5, 1967 and she took Jim’s four children (Jimmy, Debby, Cathy, and Kenneth) under her wing to raise right. Together they lived in Brazil, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Australia, Guinea (Africa), Jamaica, and Pittsburgh (again!) then Georgetown. In each of these countries, she immersed herself in the local culture by learning to speak fluent Portuguese and French and even some tribal languages. While in Guinea, she tutored French ladies in English.

Ada was active in church work wherever she went: in Brazil, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Australia, and in Jamaica. When she arrived in Georgetown, she became the Director of the Church Schools and conceived and initiated the Annual Fish Fry which is still the source of fun for Grace Episcopal and the Georgetown community. She volunteered at Georgetown Hospital and the Caring Place. She was a founding member of the Berry Creek Country Club Women’s Association, a member of the Berry Creek Ladies’ Golf Association, and their Book Club.

Ada was grand but above all, she was a lady. She could don a white dress, greet her guests, finish the last dish of a sumptuous meal and never stain her white dress. She was gracious. She was loving. She was the best partner, mother, friend a person could ask for.

The family is deeply appreciative of Deborah Phillips, Ada’s devoted and competent caregiver who brought comfort, love, care and humor into the long months of Ada’s illness. Also special thanks to the pastor and parishioners of Grace Episcopal Church for their faithful visits and spiritual comfort and to Aseracare Hospice for their attentive assistance and support.

Ada Lee Alley was predeceased by her parents Sarah and Calvin Langston, her brother Wallace Langston, her sister Lucille Kelly and her son Jimmy Alley. She is survived by her loving husband James Alley; her children Bob, Liz, Debby, Cathy, and Kenneth; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; seventeen nieces and nephews; her sister Eunice Blair from Georgetown, Tx; her brother Claude Langston from Livingston, Tx; and her sister Mildred Hurst from Jonesboro, La.

The family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 6:00- 8:00 P.M. Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 22, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, Texas. Interment will follow at South San Gabriel Cemetery in Burnet County, Texas.
