Anna L. Barnes passed away on April 13, 2011 in Georgetown, Texas. Anna was born in Leonard, Texas on Nov. 10, 1925 to William L. Rose and Florence Cloud Rose. She grew up during the Great Depression on a farm with her 5 brothers and 2 sisters in the Friendship Community near Gladewater, Texas. After graduating from Gladewater High School in 1943, she left home to find a job in Bryan, Texas. She became the secretary to the Dean of Petroleum Engineering, Texas A&M. At the Baptist Student Union, she met Charles M. Barnes, a senior in A&M’s School of Veterinary Science. They married in December 1943. After graduation, Charlie set up a private veterinary practice in Cisco, Texas. Anna was his assistant and kennel help. They left Cisco in 1947, with their first daughter, to participate in the USDA’s efforts to stop an outbreak of Hoof and Mouth Disease in Mexico. After they returned to the U.S., they moved frequently as Charlie pursued his career; living all across the United States, East to West coast, as well as Japan.
After Charlie retired from the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, they moved to Rising Star to live on ranch property, interrupted by a short tour in Pakistan. In 1994, they settled in Sun City, Georgetown to finally retire and take it easy. They were one of the first couples to move in to Sun City. They enjoyed taking part in many of the clubs, classes and activities over the years.
Anna was a devoted wife and mother of four children: Polly, Molly, John, and James; the grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of three. After a long struggle with Alzheimer’s and Leukemia, Anna passed away at home.
Arrangements under the direction of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, Georgetown, TX.
